HIP DYSPLASIA
As Hip Dysplasia is a common problem within medium, large and giant breeds, we feel it best that it be included in this section.
At present it is not a requirement by the Kennel Club that boxers be hip scored and cases of Hip Dysplasia within the breed are rare. However some cases have been reported in the past, how much is due to Enviromental or Hereditary factors is unknown.
It is know that two factors determine whether Hip Dysplasia (HD) will occur and if so how bad it will be. These are Hereditary and Enviromental factors. Hereditary relates to the genetic code passed on to offspring by both parents. Enviromental relates to all the outside influences which alter and shape the growth and function of the bones, cartilage, ligaments, tenders and muscles of the body. Enviromental problems are highly significant during the early stages of a dogs life, when rapid growth and soft bones can ...... Changes begin as the very young puppy starts to become active and continue until the puppy is skeletally mature. All essential nutritional requirements for the skeletal growth must be available in the correct proportions and at the correct time to ensure growth plates are not damaged. The enviroment within which the dog is raised, including the type and intensity of exercise, growth rate and body weight are significant influences.
Heredity is also a major factor and this is something which we are able to influence with selective breeding of tested parents. This is easily achieved by X-ray examination, which looks at the relative shape and position of the femoral head and acetabulum and the presence and degree of secondary changes.

In general the Boxer is a healthy breed, but as with all breeds (including crossbreeds) can be susceptible to inherited diseases. Although there are no required health tests it is strongly recommended by the Kennel Club that Heart Testing for Aortic Stenosis be carried out Boxers before considering breeding. There are other conditions which Boxers can be prone to and we feel these should also be included on this page.
